Act now to prevent a Mobile Chernobyl
*ACT NOW TO STOP "INTERIM" STORAGE OF HIGH-LEVEL RADIOACTIVE WASTE
TELL SECRETARY CHU TO REIN IN THE BRC AND WORK TOWARD ISOLATION OF
RADIOACTIVE WASTE, NOT A NEW MOBILE CHERNOBYL*
January 17, 2012
Dear Friends,
Energy Secretary Stephen Chu's Blue Ribbon Commission on America's
Nuclear Future (BRC) is about to release its final report and
recommendations. Based on their draft documents, the BRC is intending to
use the pretext of wanting to move high-level radioactive waste from
closed reactor sites in a new attempt to revive the discredited concept
of establishing an "interim" storage site for this lethal waste. This
idea, similar to one proposed in the 1990s, would bring about the
widespread transport of lethal radioactive waste across America's roads
and rails. Back then, we called it "Mobile Chernobyl"--a phrase that
still fits.
*Help stop a new "Mobile Chernobyl." Individuals, sign the petition here [

]. Organizations, see below.*
In reality, a temporary site might not turn out to be temporary. Even if
it were, the added transportation of this waste across the nation would
pose additional and unnecessary security and accident risks. Moreover,
the major purpose of an "interim" site is to encourage continued
generation of radioactive waste as well as make the dangerous and dirty
reprocessing of this waste more viable, while avoiding development of a
permanent solution.
We are not fooled. And we don't think you are either. NIRS and
enviromental activists from areas around closed reactor sites, who know
this policy would be too dangerous and would lead us no closer to a real
solution to the radioactive waste problem, have prepared a new sign-on
letter to Secretary Chu. We hope you will sign on. You can read the full
text of the letter and see the convening signers here. [

Chu on January 24, 2012. Signers will be added to the full version
delivered to Secretary Chu. *Please note: *your street address, phone and
e-mail information will *NOT* be provided to the Department of Energy.
Our friends outside the U.S. are welcome to participate in this action.
*Reminder:* last Friday we asked you to send a letter to President Obama
demanding an end to the nuclear loan program. The response has been
great, but if you haven't yet done so, please send your letter now here [

]. We want to make sure President Obama hears from ALL of us!
Thanks for all you do,
